Manoa Yoga Center Teachers

Shelley Choy founded in 2000 the Hatha Yoga Center in Honolulu. The center grew into the BKS Iyengar Yoga Center of Honolulu, which she co-directs with Ray Madigan. She has practiced Iyengar yoga since 1994 and is an Intermediate certified Iyengar yoga instructor level 2. Shelley studied at the Iyengar Institute in India in 2003, 2005, 2007. She also regularly studies with senior Iyengar teachers. Shelley enjoys teaching and interacting with her students and sends daily gratitude to the Iyengar family for their devoted and profound penetration into the art, science and philosophy of yoga. Ray Madigan, Co-Director of BKS Iyengar Yoga Center of Honolulu, began the practice of Yoga in 1984. He is an Intermediate certified Iyengar yoga instructor Level 3 . Ray has attended the Iyengar Institute in India for intensive study with the Iyengars in 1996, 2003, 2005 and 2007. He also continues to study with senior level certified Iyengar yoga teachers. Ray is a Registered Nurse and enjoys teaching people of all capabilities and conducts private yoga sessions to help those who are sick or injured. email Ray

Chris Havener started her yoga studies in1989 at the Iyengar Center of Greater Boston and has taught since 1996. She recently passed her first level of Intermediate certification. Chris studied with the Iyengars in India for two months in 2000 and has attended the Iyengar conventions in Minneapolis and Las Vegas.

Dennis Masui is a retired school teacher with 20 years experience in yoga. He has taught for 7 years in Honolulu. He is currently apprenticing with Ray and Shelley as preparation for assessment for certification as an Iyengar Yoga Instructor. Dennis has attended numerous workshops with senior Iyengar yoga teachers and is a student of Healing Touch and Zen Triggerppoint therapies.

Debra Michels is Iyengar yoga certified at the Introductory level and has taught yoga since 1989. She graduated from the Barbara Brennan School of Healing in 2003 and teaches energy work at Sacred Path Healing School. Debra is also a licensed massage therapist.

Laurie Freedhas explored and practiced various types of yoga for almost 20 years and in 2003 made the commitment to devote herself to Iyengar yoga. After a two year apprenticeship with Ray and Shelley she earned her Introductory Certiification in 2008. Laurie is also an avid painter with a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Laurie also teaches at Waimanalo.

Carol Ahuna is apprenticing with Ray and Shelley in preparation for certification. She has been a student of Iyengar Yoga since 1993.

Certification Mark

This mark is awarded solely to certified Iyengar-trained teachers who have met the rigorous standards for yoga practice and teaching established and administered by the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States.
